Heads in Amber

All animals have heads. They come in all shapes and sizes. These are the most notable ones we have found.


3) Unusual cricket with very large head and seemingly small body. All body parts seem present.

Origin: Hukawng Valley, Kachin State, Myanmar

Age: ~98–100 million years 

Geologic Period: Mid-Cretaceous


This cricket has a very large head, relative to it's body.



2) Fly in amber with a very large head.

Provenance: Burmese Amber (Myanmar)

Origin: Hukawng Valley, Kachin State, Myanmar

Age: ~98–100 million years 

Geologic Period: Mid-Cretaceous


Two large compound eyes that touch in the middle. Possibly a rare robber fly.



1) Clear adult fly.

Origin: Dominican Republic

Age: ~15–20 million years 

Geologic Period: Miocene


Excellent wing display and veins. Possibly a male mosquito. All body parts shown well.
